2nd Place Winner | Karagathon 2020
September 2020

Hydraean Project wins a Nationwide hacakathon in the Philippines, Karagathon 2020 a hackathon looking for tech-based solutions to combat illegal fishing in the Philippines.
The Project was originally created as an entry to the first ever Karagathon. A hackathon calling for Technology-based solutions to combat illegal fishing in the Philippines. The event was hosted by: Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, DOST-ASTI, Oceana Philippines, and Karagatan Patrol

The original system developed was a combination of IoT-hardware devices used to send alerts and messages across long distances using LoRa Technology. As seen in the picture above, on the left are the prototype hardware devices, a combination of nodes and gateways. and on the right, is a computer running the Hydraean Web Application.
There are two types of hardware devices in the system which are Nodes and Gateways. Nodes are responsible for sending both Illegal Fishing Activity or Emergency Alerts. This can be triggered Manually or through a web application hosted by the Node Devices that can be accessed using a smartphone.
The Gateway Device acts as a simple LoRa Gateway, that listens for transmissions from node devices and either send them to other gateways or attempts to connect to the internet and send the report to the web application.
